Helmets, armour & Sicilian Tomatoes :)

Went to the Tower of London today. That was okay, but I went specifically to see the Ravens & they were in cages & I couldn’t even see them. A lovely American girl gave me a great thought though- I’ve seen a SOLAR ECLIPSE! Far cooler than Ravens! (But my Daddy told me about the Ravens, I really wanted to see them because of him, although I must admit this morning I couldn’t remember whether they were Crows, Ravens or Bats!) Heaps of armour in the… armoury surprise! Some suits were elaborately decorated with designs detailing the history of Alexander the Great. I was most fascinated by the suits of armour for boys, pretty cute! Oh, and the rather large protection surrounding the “crown jewels” of a suit for Henry the 8th or one of those King fellas… someone had something to prove! Hehhehee!

Speaking of jewels, we also fell into the sheep line to see the British Crown Jewels. I thought I was lining up for the Lethal Weapon at Movie World in the Gold Coast, due to the back & forth railing & the dozens of eager tourists who quickly became cheesed off at the commercial nature of the experience. It was a total sham really. We went through a few rooms initially which had footage of the jewels & the Queens coronation being projected onto the walls. Gigantic images of the sapphires & diamonds gave the impression that perhaps that was as close as you were going to get to the real thing. Then we filed into the next room & found cabinets of these gold staff sceptre thingys… SHOW US THE GLITTERY JEWELS!!! Then a beautiful coronation robe & stole; intricately embroidered with cream, gold & red; & those cool trumpety things with the tapestry tied with ribbons. Finally the room with the crowns, travellators either side of the glass cabinets to ensure traffic is moved on. Bodra & I opted for the higher view & walked along a platform at a distance from the cabinets. Maybe the distance lessened the impressing impact- jewels were jewels. I much prefer ‘Crystal Mountain’ in Swanson!

So sick of recruiters, soccer & snooker… oh we saw our first crime this morning- on the way to the underground, some guy was coming up out of it & he had a motorcycle helmet on & I was thinking “That’s weird, where is his motorcycle?” & then I realised he seemed kind of nervous. He had a big black case which looked all security like. & then as I was crossing over towards him I just about got run over, then I walked past him, & then turned back to comment on him to Bodra & then I saw these two dudes with black balaclavas running away with the cases. Bodra said the 2 dudes ran out in front of him… I felt a bit annoyed at my instincts because I had an inkling something funny was going on with the car… I should of gone all Matrix styles & leapt up on the bonnet & kicked in the windshield!!!
Upon reflection, I guess the motorcycle helmet was for in case someone would try to smack him over the head with a baseball bat. What a terrible occupation, having to be prepared for that kind of situation! I won’t be applying for a job in that industry! Bodra & I are both very well rehearsed at delivering our work history & interests to recruiters. It’s a bit frustrating for Bo, he has applied for numerous positions & then had the recruiters blah away to him & that’s as close as he gets to the industry. Me? I could start work tomorrow it seems- if I were willing to do teaching- yuck! Those terrible ‘Little Angels’ & ‘Super Nanny’ shows really put me off… & then this morning on my way to a recruiters- Hays, don’t go to them, they make you fill out screeds of forms repeating over & over everything that is in your CV, really! Shouldn’t that be their work?- we passed a school where we couldn’t see what was going on due to high prison-like brick walls but I could hear the sound of loose children going manic in their pitiful 30m x 8m playground. It is an evil sound especially to sensitive ears like mine.

On our way home from the Tower of London we entered a tube that smelt… I won’t be graphic but it was disgusting. Luckily we only had to handle it for two stops. The risk you take! Then we changed for the Central line but it didn’t appear for some time. “A passenger has taken ill at Bank so the Central line is delayed.” We waited for a fair while, still no underground so as it was nearly 3pm I suggested lunch. A great discovery- Pizza Express! http://www.pizzaexpress.co.uk/indexf.htm Delicious Sicilian ’sunblush’ tomatoes & lemons. We had a yummy pizza called Verdure; slathered with veges & pesto; thirst-quenching, golden Peroni Italian beer & dessert- me, Sicilian Lemon Sorbet with a splash of vodka & Bodra, Cassata a Sicilian layered icecream with nougat & chocolate sprinkles.

In case you are wondering, yes it is my intention to ensure that your mouth is watering while you read each of these posts! Today was our first real tourist experience in London. We’ve both been so busy trying to get ourselves stable here with bank & phone stuff, agencys & recruiters… there are so many websites with jobs advertised. I’m thinking I may apply for a Mother’s Helper job, I’ve also been applying for office reception jobs & retail at Hilary’s work House of Fraser.

Last weekend Bo & I caught up on Prison Break & Lost. That was Saturday gone- how we’ve missed lazing in front of TV/ Computer! :) Then on Sunday Bodra baked shortbread & I made a card. We visited with Tony, Liz & their daughter Hilary for more delicious kai & very long talks about cooking & life in London… As it was Betty’s birthday we went & saw her at the nursing home. She greatly appreciated the shortbread! Betty can’t use the left side of her body after suffering a stroke. She has plenty of humour & light, so it seems. I felt a bit awkward, not really knowing what was appropriate. It feels funny meeting family for the first time, & you want to reach out & hug but you don’t for some reason. We met ‘Uncle’ Charlie there too who was visiting Betty. Not sure if he is Betty’s brother or what!

This weekend I hope we travel out of London or at least go & wander through a park or two. But then I don’t really want to as I don’t have Azaeus to walk with… sigh! Next weekend Kim & I will be travelling to Hereford for our Fairy potential staff weekend. Very excited about that- I hope they love us & want us as their fairies, then that will be some work over the Summer weekends & a chance to see a few festivals. Mostly I hope it is a chance to unleash my creative potential in a trusting environment where I can extend my skills & then set upon a path that is right for ME! If you have a spare moment, could you please imagine this & send me some ‘fairy’ energy?! I’m starting to feel a little (lot) downhearted about the whole career scene here. It’s hard when you just want to find something that is right for you, but you don’t know what that is or if it is possible!

Bodra will write one day- I think he might find it hard to sit in front of a computer & type, after all he has done that for such a huge part of his life. Much like I shudder at the thought of having children near me… just kidding! I really like well-behaved kiddies or at least playful ones with a bit of mischief… missing my nephews heaps. Six years… & I’m homesick after only one month!

Betty’s Abode

Well, we’re all settled in- yesterday afternoon we left Jono & Cecilie’s flat.  Tony gave us a patient guided tour of Tesco’s where we did a big food shop, then we unpacked our gear into the home of Bodra’s mum’s father’s cousin (whew!)- Betty Rayner.  Tony is Elizabeth’s husband, who is Betty’s daughter.  I’m unsure of the name for the relationship between Bodra & Liz- besides distant!  Betty doesn’t live here now, sadly she suffered a stroke a wee while back & now resides in a nursing home.  She’s in her 90’s & must have been going fairly strong for quite some time- the stairs up to the bedrooms would certainly keep you fit!
Yes, we were rescued by family!  Carolyn spent most of Easter Monday tracking down Tony & Liz- handy thing the Internet!  When Bodra & I returned from our wander around Shepherd’s Bush (we had been checking out the area as a potential home base & were feeling quite positive), we arrived at Jono’s just in time to catch Carolyn.  She relayed the wonderful news that all we had to do was call Tony then we would be able to enjoy Betty’s Abode.  We journeyed to Leytonstone Station & were met by Tony who drove us to the house.  A garden at the front & back!  Our road & others near it have my favourite plant, Magnolia, & they are in flower now.  Beautiful!  Daffodils are also in bloom now.  It makes the walk between our new home & the nearest station pleasant, being able to admire these lovely flowers.
So many smiley faces cover the walls & mantlepieces of the rooms, I have no clue as to who they are but I’m sure with time they will become more than familiar.  After showing us Betty’s home & having a quick chat, they took us back to their home for my first cup of real English tea & then a rejuvenating vegetarian dinner accompanied by Jacob’s Creek.  Awesome hosts, great conversation & such a relief to know that we have family here.
Tuesday was spent in search of a laptop.  Wandering down Oxford Street then Tottenham Court we finally found a store that would do us a good deal.  It’s pretty flash & came with a few bits and pieces which we bargained for- a printer, optical mouse, web cam & bag.  £1000 gone- youch!  More than we had thought of paying but it has a duo processor thingy.  Unfortunately we discovered that the printer didn’t come with the USB cable so that we could actually use it- what a jip!  However, we bought one today.
Tony picked us up from Jono & Cecilie’s flat yesterday afternoon & chaffeured all our gear & ourselves to our new home.  Baked beans on toast for dinner!  Not Watties & definitely different in taste; Tesco’s beans; unsalty & sweeter.  It’s going to be so much fun trying all these new food products- spinnach in a can, broccoli florets prepared in a bag, so many varieties in the potato chips (crisps) & juice flavours!  By the way- even KFC has baked beans.  (Informed by advertising, NOT entering that hideous takeaway outlet!)
Today we rode the subway for an hour to Finchley Central for my meet & greet with TimePlan Teaching agency.  They’ll be phoning me between 7-9am when there is a job for me, so I need to be up, dressed, fed & ready to go by 7am… omg!  I don’t quite know how I feel about that- not one for early, early mornings!  Especially when it is cold.  I will be trying to find other possible sources of income that will impinge less on my morning rest (oh how decadent!).  An hour back to Leytonstone- the first carriage smelt of urine & then the second carriage had an elderly gentleman sitting opposite me absolutely devoured by his newspaper, face 10cm from the paper & he darted all over the page & within a few seconds would turn the page.  I don’t quite understand what he was getting from doing so- I really wanted to read to him but I don’t think he would’ve been able to hear me over the subway clatter.
Newspapers are everywhere.  Yesterday morning I saw a shocker headline about over 200 Scottish Terriers being found abandoned in a house, caged & trapped in their fecal matter.  By noon I had read the article by peering over the shoulder of a passenger in the subway- we exchanged expressions of disgust.  I’ll be keeping an eye on the development of that story as there may be some mature Scottish Terriers needing a home & we all know how much I love dogs!  So wonderful pulling out a photo of Azaeus yesterday & gazing at his majectic beauty.  Sigh!  No dog compares to him!
We are definitely experienced enough now with the public transport system, I’m feeling completely confident at orienting myself.  & the subways aren’t that scary despite the smells, they have vending machines with mini cadbury creme eggs in them!  Sometimes subways are quite exciting, especially when there is music wafting towards us & we discover a busker.  The acoustics are fantastic for guitar & voice.  Can’t wait to hear flute!
Bodra has been battling all day & night with the washing machine.  It just doesn’t want to obey & he has read the manual & followed the instructions- perhaps it is perturbed at having to function for us mere New Zealanders!  A part from that, everything is going fairly smoothly.  Ez & Kim are fairly comfortable at Neils home.  We haven’t seen them since Saturday but we will be meeting up this weekend for Chicane.  Our first London gig!  Ez gave me the great news that there will be a Tool concert at the Hammersmith Apollo in June so he is sorting tickets for that- hurrah!
Thank goodness for todays technology!  & having a clever husband.  I’m typing this using someone else’s Internet connection!  Shhhhh!  Secret Squirrel!  Go the WiFi & non-firewalled Internet user!  We also were able to have a wee chat to Michael using our webcam, isn’t it great when you can see each other aswell as hear?!  Can’t wait to hear Azaeus & his confused whine.  (Where is she coming from?)
The washing machine is still unwilling to do our bidding.  Bodra is back to the manual in the hope that there is something that he has missed.  Like a secret chant.  He has a meeting with a tax consultant tomorrow morning.  No fresh undies- drat!
British television is pretty pitiful.  Snooker, elderly British in pubs, celebrity doco’s & ‘Home & Away’, but it is nice to have something to blob out to with our new chippies.  Can’t wait until we have broadband & can get back to ‘Lost’ & ‘Prison Break’!
